Cambridge-Conference Network
"Only a threat from beyond the Earth can unify the
quarrelsome human species" (Sir Arthur C Clarke)
SOME CLARIFICATIONS REGARDING THE CAMBRIDGE-CONFERENCE NETWORK
By Benny J Peiser (Liverpool John Moores University, UK)
The Cambridge-Conference is an e-mail network set up by myself almost a
year ago in the run-up of the 2nd SIS Cambridge Conference on "Natural
Catastrophes during Bronze Age Civilisations: Archaeological,
Geological, Astronomical and Cultural Perspectives" which took place at
Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge in July of 1997. [Full details can be
found at http://www.knowledge.co.uk/xxx/cat/sis/cambconf.htm]
While this meeting was organised by the British Society for
Interdisciplinary Studies (SIS), I would like to stress that the
electronic CC-network is fully independent and not linked to any
institution or organisation. It relies on the input by and co-operation
of its members and is open to every person interested in NEO research,
NEO-catastrophism and the development of a planetary civilisation
capable of protecting itself from cosmic disaster.
It is the aim of this global network to disseminate the latest
information related to i) the emerging science of geological and
historical neo-catastrophism, ii) NEO research and the hazards to
civilisation due to comets and asteroids, and iii) the development of a
global system of planetary defense. The CC-list also intends to keep
members up to date about new research findings, relevant publications
and the cultural, philosophical and religious implications due to the
new awareness of our vulnerable place in space.
The main topics of interest include:
The British School of Coherent Catastrophism
The Mass Extinction Debate
Historical Catastrophism & Civilisation Collapse
Cometary Impacts and the Origins of Life on Earth
Assessing the Impact Hazard: how dangerous are NEOs?
Planetary Defense: detecting and deflecting NEOs
The Implications of Neo-Catastrophism on Science, Philosophy &
Religion
Members of the CC-network include many of the world's leading NEO
researchers, but also archaeologists, climatologists, historians,
geologists, sociologists and, of course, many interested non-academics
- currently some 220 people from more than 30 countries from around the
world.
The CC-list is not a regular e-mail discussion group. Its main aim
is the dissemination of new information (and the correction of
misinformation) which is of relevance to a better understanding of our
cosmic (and cultural) environment.
I am very grateful to Ron Baalke for circulating the CC-Digest on the
meteorite-list and hope that this initial co-operation between the two
networks can be consolidated in the future. After all, mankind is
facing a cosmic challenge of such proportion that it's repulsion
requires the concerted effort of all of us.
Should individual members, nevertheless, wish to subscribe to the
CC-list directly, please feel free to contact me.
