[meteorite-list] In regards to NWA 10495

Physical characteristics: Several grayish brown stones (total weight 15.6 kg) lacking fusion crust, but with a polished external appearance. All exhibit the same overall fine grained texture, with some visible larger whitish clasts within a dark gray matrix. Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Relatively fine grained fragmental breccia composed of mineral clasts of anorthite, pigeonite, olivine, augite, Ti-chromite and troilite set in a matrix containing minor secondary barite. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa34.8-42.3, FeO/MnO = 86-95, N = 4), pigeonite (Fs29.8-32.4Wo8.8-12.9, FeO/MnO = 47-52, N = 3), augite (Fs20.6Wo35.4, FeO/MnO = 49), plagioclase (An96.4-97.1Or0.1, N = 2). Bulk composition (R. Korotev, WUSL) INAA of subsamples gave the following mean abundances: (in wt.%) FeO 7.0, Na2O 0.30; (in ppm) Sc 17.0, La 1.9, Sm 1.0, Eu 0.67, Yb 1.0, Lu 0.15, Hf 0.6, Th 0.15. Classification: Lunar (feldspathic breccia). Specimens: 24.3 g including one stone polished on one side at UWB; the remaining material is held by the anonymous finders. ---------------------------------------------------------- Nowhere in this entry is there any mention of a single large mass. In fact, it states that there are several similar stones that were recovered. Unless one is privy to facts that are not publicly known, there is no way to determine if NWA 10495 is the world's largest lunar meteorite. Meteorite collectors rely on the Met Bulletin for the majority of their information. The next source that is relied upon is publicly-available data. AFAIK, the owner(s) of NWA 10495 have never made any public announcements about that lunar. Until this recent ruckus over NWA 5000, I was not even aware that NWA 10495 had a dog in the fight. (And I watch the Bulletin religiously for new approvals). I am sure I saw NWA 10495 when it was first approved, but it was lost (to me) amongst the many new lunars coming out the NWA DCA. Reading the description yields no clues as to the disposition of the mass(es). Hopefully NWA 10495 is not another Kalahari lunar in terms of mystery. Until a new large lunar is introduced to the public, any claims about NWA 5000 stand. The Kalahari lunar is owned by an eccentric who has no plans to ever show the meteorite or make it available to collectors. It is just another entry in the Met Bulletin that is poorly documented (in terms of collector interest). As for the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum, where is it? AFAIK it is just a website and a plan. The only other time I have heard of it is when it was mentioned as part of the stolen pallasite scandal recently. For the director to come out of the gate and start launching accusations against established members of the community is a little confusing. Both Greg and Adam have a long history of providing planetary meteorites to collectors and scientists. The issue of whether NWA 5000 is the largest lunar meteorite has already been debated on this List numerous times and the general public is well aware of the competing claims of the Kalahari lunar and others. Until a meteorite is shown publicly and certified, it is just another rock in the Met Bulletin. NWA 5000 remains the most documented large lunar in the world. Anyone can claim to be the World Record holder of eating the most hotdogs, but until a claim is certified by an authoritative body, it is just a claim. As a collector, I am always interested in new lunars and look forward to any public announcement regarding new planetaries. If and when NWA 10495 is certified and announced, I will be one of the first to drool over it. In fact, I have extended family in Maine and some of them are making a trip up there this summer. I would gladly direct them to pay the museum a visit to view the wonders on display there, if that museum actually existed.
