When considering meteorites that are described as "impact melt", I
have a question regarding the heat required to melt the materials.

How is the heat responsible for the melting generated?

In other words, is the heat generated by the impact itself or the
immediate after-effects of the impact? Is it the moment of impact
that produces the heat, or is the heat produced by the subsequent
compression of materials at the point of impact?

Best regards,

MikeG
