Hi all,

The British and Irish Meteorite Society has come on in leaps and
bounds over the last few years. We have a great website and a new
forum which is working well. We are also attending more and more
outreach/educational events which we have had excellent feedback from.
The more events we attend the more we get asked to do and we have a
number of such events planned for 2014. To ensure that we can continue
in this vein and improve even more, we as a society have decided that
instead of charging a membership fee, we will instead ask for
donations from members on a yearly basis. This then leaves it up to
individual members whether to donate or not. The more we grow as a
society and the more outreach/educational events that we attend the
greater grow our costs. At the moment our website and associated fees
are paid by a single member. Our display boards and lighting again
have been paid for by another member and the cost of printing posters
have been borne by someone else etc. etc. Some of these costs are one
off purchases and we get continued use out of those investments,
however others are ongoing costs and it really shouldn't be the case
that these are continually paid for by the same individual members.

We currently have 150+ people in BIMS although we have a core active
membership of less than 20. So far we have managed to raise ?145 in
donations this year from members. This has enabled us to get a large
outdoor banner printed to use at outreach events and some more posters
etc. We have an upcoming event at the prestigious Cheltenham Science
Fair in June and this has raised an issue of public liability
insurance. At all previous events we have attended we have been
covered by an umbrella policy from the organisers but this time we
need our own policy. This raises issues for us as an organisation and
unless we can sort this out for this event and for others it may
prevent us from doing as many outreach events as we have been doing.

We are a UK based organisation and i understand that all of our
outreach events do not benefit people in the meteorite community
abroad, however i am sending this message out on the off chance that
people may consider donating a few pounds to assist us to continue to
put on our meteorite outreach displays over the coming years. We have
a BIMS paypal account and any and all donations however small will
really help us to grow and to continue in the same vein. I understand
completely that this may not be felt to relevant to many but if anyone
feels otherwise then we appreciate every little bit of assistance :-)

The Paypal email to donate to is britishmeteorite at gmail.com and all
donations will be anonymous (other than to the chairman and treasurer
of BIMS) thank you in advance for any donations made :-)

Cheers

Martin
