Great post, Rob, as usual. From the short term effects of "quantitative
easing" (buckle up for the long term effects, and it would be irresponsible
to use the stock market as a current gauge), to the recent and intriguing
modification of employment statistics (right you are below), to the
burgeoning matter of healthcare cost expansion...no need to go further,
although that's easily doable. We are indeed releasing some pent-up demand,
but without a doubt, the domestic economy is not yet approaching recovery.
So, to your initial point below, perhaps it is a good time to buy
extraterrestrial real estate.

To make this discussion a little more meteorite-specific, in a truly healthy
economy meteorites could not be purchased for the low prices they currently
command. The economy is doing fine if your gauge of the economy is the stock
market. If you're wealthy, you're probably having a good year. But if you're
right out of college any time in the last five years, you are probably not
doing so well.

GDP growth was 5% for the 3rd quarter -- not for the year. It remains to be
seen whether that admittedly impressive level is sustained. A few other
factors to keep in mind. The stock market and most commodities are priced in
dollars; what happens to the price of stocks when the dollar falls in value?
Another sign of a struggling economy is the ratio of the price of platinum
to the price of gold. Mined platinum is far rarer and more valuable to
industry than gold. It is also more expensive to extract, and is mined in
far fewer places in the world than is gold. (South Africa accounts for over
70% of annual production; no one country accounts for more than ~15% of gold
production.) Gold is perceived as a safe haven and a hedge against inflation
or recession; platinum, by contrast, is sensitive to economic cycles,
precisely because of its heavy use in industry (e.g. automobiles). When
economic times are bad, the price of platinum can fall as low as gold, or
even below it (as it did for most of 2012). As recently as last week, gold
and platinum were at parity, which is a sign of questionable economic
health. As proof, this latest GDP number has given platinum a boost, but
done nothing to the price of gold. Compare here:

As for the unemployment rate, you are referring to the commonly reported U3
number which does not include people who have given up looking for work, but
*does* include people who work part-time (not by choice) as little as one
hour a week. The U6 number is more representative of the true employment
situation, and while it has been falling since 2010, the U6 number was lower
from 1994 all the way until late 2008. --Rob

Simply ask how many people are better off these days. Nearly 50% of the
houses in my neighborhood are vacant and remain on the market. In a booming
economy these houses would be occupied! I do not listen to false reports
and twisted numbers. I observe what is really happening.

Poor economy? Stock market crashing through record highs, GDP growth of 5%
this year, best since 2003, fuel prices collapsing, unemployment rate lowest
