Your analogy using gold is right on. I found a 29 pound meteorite a few years ago and, in a contentious and round about way, one half ended up in the Smithsonian. I still have the main mass of Stump Springs 83 an LL6 that I had Ted Bunch classify and I feel free to sell, or trade, without iinteference because the regs weren't codified at the time. What would happen if I found it today...I don't know.
