I see it all the time. Wind-polished UNWA chondrites that have been sandblasted for centuries (or eons) have NO fusion crust on them. That glossy dark-brown coloration is the result of aeolian effects in which the winds deposit trace amounts of minerals onto the specimen. To some dealers, including a few who should know better, they seem to think that every glossy brown NWA chondrite is covered in "fusion crust". It's misleading at best. I've even seen dealers offering Campo del Cielo irons with "fusion crust"..... LOL Another thing that aggravates me is the misuse of the word "regmaglypts" - there are plenty of indentations in meteorites (especially stony-types) that are not caused by atmospheric entry forces. One only has to look at some of the terrestrial ventifacts on the mineral market to see that not every dent, scoop, or pit is a regmaglypt. Again, I see this from dealers who should know better. I am going to go back through my store listings in my Hammer category and make sure that I am not misleading anyone by accident. I use the word hammer-fall to refer to falls that involved a hammer, and I never use "hammer stone" for those falls. However, now that Mike and a few others bring this up, I want to make sure that somewhere in my hammer-fall descriptions, I will clearly state - THIS IS NOT FROM THE ACTUAL HAMMER STONE. I don't sell on eBay, and 90% of my sales come from experienced collectors or trades with other dealers. These are people who know the difference and do not need a heavy disclaimer to explain the difference between a hammer-stone and a hammer-fall. However, the occasional newbie will browse the site and I want to ensure they do not get confused. I may sell mostly tiny micros, but I want each one of those specimens to be clearly and accurately described. I've been doing this for almost 5 years now, so I don't consider myself a "new" dealer or collector - I've soaked up a lot of useful knowledge from this list (and reading), and I think we have a responsibility of sorts to help educate these newer dealers who are not using the right nomenclature or descriptive language. The problem is, some of these new guys are stubborn and they will not listen to good advice from a more experienced dealer. I can't think one individual who is currently selling meteorites across the web and he frequently misuses basic terms like fusion-crust and regmaglypts. I have politely contacted him more than once and tried to clearly explain the differences and I think it offended him because he never responded to me. It is up to us, the more experienced collectors/dealers/hunters to educate these people for the benefit of the entire meteorite market. If we don't take the time to do this, it will only cause a proliferation of misrepresentation and misuse of nomeclature.
