My first thought was either Airsoft or paintball pellets.? Particular types of Airsoft pellets (the biodegradable ones) and paintball pellets (which have a gelatin shell) swell up and look weird when they get wet.? All it would take is a neighbor kid playing with paintballs or Airsoft, and a heavy dew or light shower overnight...

Best!
