As I left the city's light halo I began to notice a pulsing pink/orange light stretching for miles above the eastern horizon. As I advanced for the next 30 miles the light became brighter and higher in the sky and the flicker became more noticeable. I then realized I was viewing the undersides of high cirrus clouds reflecting the burning of natural gas flares at newly completed oilwells. That portion of the state was in the midst of an oil boom and scores of new wells added their glow to a most unusual night ride- I couldn't help but think of Dante and some inferno about which he opined...
