Shortly before midnight, on October 9, 1992, a brilliant fireball lit up the night sky over New York State. It caused a major sensation as countless witnesses saw the fragmenting fireball and several of them caught the event on film. Meanwhile, at 207 Wells Street, in Peekskill NY, seventeen year old Michele Knapp was startled to hear a loud crash and twisting metal. The crash was a 12+ kilogram H6 chondrite striking and penetrating the rear of her red 1980 Chevy Malibu that was parked in the driveway! The meteorite caused considerable damage and the car was later purchased by meteorite collectors, yielding a healthy profit for the young Ms. Knapp. Peekskill is a classic American hammer meteorite and is quite rare on the market. I managed to acquire some small cutting fragments and I have made these into attractive display specimens.
