"Was the previous classification a L4-6 regolith breccia, or just L4-6?"

It was classified as an L4?6 fragmental breccia.

In 2008, there was a paper by the same author but different co-authors
and then already, these authors proposed NWA 869 should be called
an L3-6 regolith breccia. See here:

Metzler K. et al. (2008) The L3-6 Regolith Breccia Northwest Africa 869: Petrology, Noble Gases And Cosmogenic Radionuclides (Lunar and Planetary Science XXXIX, 2008, 1120.pdf).

In the 2011 MAPS article the authors point out that the variability of olivine compositions ranges from Fa0 to Fa50 and that of low-Ca pyroxenes from
Fs0 to Fs35 to justify their proposal to reclassify this desert beauty.
