[meteorite-list] So do we have bits of Vesta in our collections or not?

Well, you've got to admit no matter what you are convinced of ...

...that being sure of a parent body is a lot harder than taking a
picture of it on the fly in any wavelength (a few weeks ago I posted
the reflectance spectroscopy paper that thought they nailed
howardite/diogenite as the perfect match for Vesta reflectance data in
the UV range. Seems the analysis crew isn't having much better luck
that some of the meteorwrongs and 'rites posted to the list.

No substitute for material in hand ;-!

(which makes meteorite collecting more revealing than astronomy at
times)

the howardite paper, again, was:

http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1110/1110.4113.pdf

ref:
Ultraviolet spectroscopy of Asteroid (4) Vesta, Jian-Yang Li, Dennis
Bodewits, Lori M. Feaga, Wayne Landsman, Michael F. A?Hearn,
Max J. Mutchler, Christopher T. Russell, Lucy A. McFadden, Carol A.
Raymond, Icarus, Dec. 2011, Pages 640-649.

Kindest wishes
Doug

All has been very quiet on the Dawn front...should be interesting when
all the data is put together....seems there are still doubts!
