To locate this particular astrobleme would for all intents and purposes lay the terrestrial/lunar origin argument completely to rest. This discovery would place a connate crater with all four of the well studied tektite occurences (Belize tektites excluded as they are not yet well researched/interpreted). The fact that three events already have connate craters make the existence of a fourth crater rather likely. The chief reason for the inability to locate this feature is entirely geopolitical. The Gulf of Tonkin is considered to be a very likely location for the crater and that region is embroiled in a perpetual ownership battle among several Asian countries. The likelihood of seeing any of the data that these nations might have gathered is slim to none unless these differences are peacefully resolved. Core samples from the gulf which show the last one million years would provide all enlightenment necessary to support/disprove a Tonkin crater. How close to this region have less contentious cores been collected? Can they be accessed? Perhaps examination of cores from the periphery could give insight as to what the Gulf of Tonkin does or does not hold. Happy hunting, Brian Received on Tue 30 Aug 2011 12:21:39 PM PDT |
