Hi Dirk,

I received a SPOT as a Christmas present and have been quite satisfied with
it.

Pros:

-Small size compared to other PLB's

-Ability to send pre-programmed personalized messages with coordinates. I
have two messages programmed. The first is a "This is where we are
camping/staying" and "This is the area we are hunting."

-Ability to track online. You can set up a password protected page and give
anyone access to it. They can see your tracks and messages. Piece of mind
for the wife and family.

-Batteries last a long time. I think I ran mine for nearly a week before the
batteries died.

Cons:

-As with any PLB, you can't have it too close to your regular GPS (not in
the same pocket), as it can interfere. I simply keep the PLB in my jacket
pocket and my regular GPS in my backpack or satchel or vice versa.

-Annual subscription fee. To utilize all the functions of the SPOT will cost
you over $100 per year. If you don't want all the features, you can buy a
different (one button) PLB that has little or no fees.

*TIP: we learned later that there are many online promotions for SPOT - some
had free first year subscriptions or even a free device. Do you homework and
search PLB forums for promo codes and offers.

All in all I believe it is worth the piece of mind.

Dear List,
Does anyone have any personal use experience of a PLB (Personal Locator
Beacon)? Some places meteorite hunters go do not have cell phone coverage.
