You wrote, "Congrats Greg on the spectacular and anomalous specimen." NWA 5400 is actually "Ungrouped" instead of anomalous. "Anomalous" implies that it is different from a known group of meteorites, NWA 5400 does not belong to any current classification, it created its own and stands alone! ;-) As for what drew me to NWA 5400 when I first saw it? I would have to say that upon examining the material under my 10x loupe in the field, I knew with a 90% certainty that it was a meteorite by what the matrix looked like. It had a similar appearance to primitive achondrites I had dealt with up to that point, but there was something 'different' about it. It is very difficult to explain, but after examining literally 10's of 1000's of stones over the years, I've been able to pick ones that are especially different. I have purchased many worthless terrestrial rocks over the years in the pursuit of rare meteorites, but that is part of the gamble we need to be willing to take. I have to give a huge amount of credit to the scientists I work with who I consider an important part of a 'team' in order to acquire such rare meteorites, without them I would not have been able to do it. NWA 5400 is kind of a Cinderella story. While this meteorite may be somewhat plain on the outside, it is a scientific beauty! I think it also qualifies as the 'largest' in its type class! :-) Best regards, Greg ==================== Greg Hupe The Hupe Collection NaturesVault (eBay) gmhupe at htn.net www.LunarRock.com IMCA 3163 ==================== Click here for my current eBay auctions: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZnaturesvault ----- Original Message ----- From: "Galactic Stone & Ironworks" <meteoritemike at gmail.com> To: "Greg Hupe" <gmhupe at htn.net> Cc: <meteorite-list at meteoritecentral.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 09, 2010 10:09 AM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] NWA 5400: Available Specimens - AD Congrats Greg on the spectacular and anomalous specimen. :) Upon seeing the photos, something strikes me - how "normal" some of these rare meteorites look. At first glance, this new meteorite looks like a million other weathered chondrites. Was there something about it that caught your experienced eye? As with some brachinites, these stones look "normal" on the outside, but the secrets contained within are amazing.
