Hi Paul -

The myth of Phaethon appears to precede Cheimgau by several centuries.

Along the same lines, Sumerian impact traditions were explored by me many years ago:

That said, what produced the Cheimgau features are still under discussion, as are the YD events.

If you want dead, try the mammoths and mastodons and some 41 other species.
