A former Michigan man is seeking anyone in the Sault Ste. Marie area who
may have witnessed anything unusual in the skies Sept. 1.

According to numerous accounts, a massive fireball streaked across the
upper part of Michigan's lower peninsula shortly after 9 p.m. Dozens of
witnesses describe it alternately growing green and red, and leaving a
trail of glowing fragments as it traveled eastward. Looking to some like
a burning jet plan, from some localities it was seen for seven seconds
and from others deafening sonic booms were heard that rattles home for
miles.

Reports have come in from as far away as Wisconsin and Sudbury,
indicating it landed in Michigan. Now, Darryl Pitt believes he can
triangulate its landing spot more accurately if he got local witnesses.

Pitt is curator of the Macovich Collection in New York City, one of the
world's largest collection of space rocks. He calls Sault Ste. Marie a
"perfect observation point" because he needs at least a couple of
accounts north of the fireball's trajectory to pinpoint a landing spot.

He promises to visit the Sault for a talk and presentation of specimens,
including from the moon and Mars.

The fireball was news to Sharon Valli, president of the Twin Sault
Astronomy Club. Valli said the club met last week and no one brought up
the subject. "That definitely would have come up, because it's a big
thing," she said.
