Hi Adam,

Thanks for the insightful answer. I know the Met Bulletin entries
often have discrepancies and errors in translation. I asked
because I recently offered a freebie to my friends if they could
tell me what the second largest lunar meteorite was. I consider
NWA 5000 to be the largest and AFAIK Dar-al-Gani 400 that has
a listed TKW of 1.425kg. Unlike the sketchy Kalahari 009, there
are at least some photos of DaG 400 in the Met Bulletin entry.

Regards,

MikeG

Kalahari 009 is the "largest" claimed lunar meteorite but the weight has never been certified so the anonymous finder(s) has to be taken at his/her word. This is not good enough to make the record books. The weight was conveniently rounded off to 13,500 grams so who knows how accuratly it was reported. There seems to be issues with the rest of the Kalahari lunaite story so this claim should be questioned. Anybody can claim any weight they want so long as the type specimen requirement has been made.

NWA 5000, on the other hand, was certified in the presence of five witnesses so that its true weight would never come into question. In my opinion, every planetary meteorite's weight should be certified. In any case, NWA 5000 is the undisputed heavy weight champion from the highlands and the record books!

The finder(s)the Kalahari piece could snatch this world record if they simply had the weight certified.

Best Regards,

Adam
