The largest entire stone meteorite ever found, according to Professor Hovey, of the Museum of Natural History, New York. It was found March 26 in a hayfield about two miles from Selma, Ala., by J. W. Coleman. It is 20? inches high, 20 inches wide and 13 inches thick, and weighs 306 pounds. In shape it is roughly polygonal. Professor Hovey says that most aerolites break to pieces while passing through the earth's atmosphere, probably on account of unequal heating due to friction. The meteorite had evidently lade embedded where it fell since 1895. July 26 of that year several people, living in the vicinity heard a rumbling noise and saw a flaming mass shooting toward the earth. (end) Received on Thu 25 Jan 2007 10:54:16 PM PST |
