Last night at midnight, we arrived back in Muonionalusta, Sweden, to begin our second expedition here this summer. My what difference a month makes. Since leaving here exactly one month ago, many things have changed. The blueberries are ripe (billions of them), the mosquitos seem to have mostly died off (good riddence) and the darkness has returned. The 24 hour sunlight of the June/July timeframe was not so nice to sleep in. Now we have about 4 hours of darkness. Just right for a normal but longer hunting schedule. Today we unpacked my crates of stored gear, bought food, and rebuilt our machines. After testing them, and teaching the new guys how to hunt, I found the first meteorite in about 45 minutes! It was a very loud signal, and I was worried that it was just a chain or something very shallow. It wasnt. After 10 minutes of digging with a plastic hand trowel, I realized I was off by a few cm and moved over, one stab into the dirt and I hit the jackpot. I dug up a 34 kilogram pyramid-shaped meteorite, in absolutely perfect condition, no cracks, rust, or shale, just a perfectly formed individual. After huffing it to the car, we hunted for two more hours with no luck, and with low light, came lots of knats and some mosquitoes. We left at that time, to relax and hit it hard for a long day tomorrow. I am a little messed up from going from the equator to above the arctic circle in such a short time.
