While exceptionally thin slicing is not possible with some meteorites, most do quite nicely when thinly cut. How can it be argued that an historic fall (or any specimen, for that matter) cut .8mm thick is not worth a good deal more "per gram" than a slice of the same material 4mm in thickness. The thinner cut slice gives both MUCH more surface relative to weight and, therefore, much greater "eye appeal" and costs the seller a good deal more in both "saw loss" and in the cost of the saw capable of making such a thin slice. (A SMALL wire saw costs about $17,000.00, a large one, big enough to slice Bob Haag's Zagami stone costs about $60,000.00). $17,000 for a wire saw?? I have buy my for $1000 and I arrive to cut slices of 1 mm or under thick, large at 10 cm., with blade of 0.6 mm with any problems. matteo Received on Sun 05 Aug 2007 12:26:04 AM PDT |
