The reason there was a question about pairing was because the entry in the MetBull for BM 003 didn't include a comment, i.e. "Buck Mountains 003 is not paired to Palo Verde Mine". Without such a comment it has to be assumed that the editor of the MetBull decided to leave that pairing issue as "still open". Now, I'm wondering out-loud if there is anything distinctive about the BM 003 stone at hand-specimen size (megascopically, and not microscopically) that would help a person in the field to distinguish between PVM from BM from other L-chondrites at that locality? More than curious, Bob V. -------------- Original Message --------------- [meteorite-list] Buck Mountains 003 mhutson at pdx.edu mhutson at pdx.edu Thu Apr 5 14:53:21 EDT 2007 In reply to the message below: I did the classifications on both Palo Verde Mine and Buck Mountains 003. There is no doubt in my mind that these are two completely different L chondrites. Among other differences, Palo Verde Mine has a very distinctive texture to its feldspathic material that is not present in Palo Verde Mine. Well, it may not have really come to a conclusion, but at least this meteorite has a name, Buck Mountains 003 <http://xrl.us/BM003> And the reason that this may not have come to a conclusion is because it's still being debated whether this 34kg find is paired to the Palo Verde Mine (L6)!? But that's another thread... anyway... Congrats to Denny Asher on his entry in the MetBull. -- Bob V. ---------------------------------- http://six.pairlist.net/pipermail/meteorite-list/2007-April/033890.html Received on Mon 09 Apr 2007 02:35:34 PM PDT |
