Hello Cannon Ball Dave:

If it's not a portable wrecker ball ... Looks like scrap or a piece of
disposal oven melt from the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant. The Salvage Yard
area L5 adjacent to Kemery Lake and Prairie Creek, had the disposed metal
scrap from incineration and heavy duty oven facilities - though the find
generally isn't surprising when you consider the size of this toxic
munitions dump near Midewin and Elwood, which seems to be the area you
mention the "cannonball" was dug up...If it was from a nearby rural
plot...well maybe the homesteader went to the army junkyard and liked the
iron ball for a doorstep....

Here's a map to get your cannon ball bearings:-), and following it is the
report on the poisoning of the area with scraps and hazardous contaminations
done by the army.
