I emailed the BIMS list my following response: ..just watched it. Wicky, despite having a PhD and very expereinced is still a remarkably stupid and closed off man. Always thought that since he proposed that nostrils pointed downwards to avoid inhaling space spores...! The red rain were bloody obviously either an algal bloom or erythrocytic matter - The basic question I would say is ok, if life formed "out there" then where did it come from? because as far as I am concerned the Earth has a perfect environment for developing its own life thank you very much! I think that precursor kerogens were supplied by CC meteorites, but the magic happened in a rock pool somewhere, catalysed by the stepped surface of a platinum crystal and just the right amount of UV. Panspermia is simply a Deus ex Machina and naive. As Mark said in another posting - the principle of Occam's razor has to be applied. It was a remarkably bad program from what used to be (from the late 1960s to the 1980s) one of the most intelligent and insightful programs on TV. Their coverage of AIDS in 1982 was incredibly accurate and prescient. Now the program is just a parody of itself, like most things in our society, it has been dumbed down to the "What's Britney Spears up to now" level of intellect. Sad, really sad. This catering for the lowest common denominator is an appalling disease here in the UK - can't speak for the States or elsewhere. Snobbery is bad, but inverse snobbery is downright dangerous. </end rant> humbly and dumbly dave IMCA #0092 Sec.BIMS www.bimsociety.org Received on Wed 15 Nov 2006 04:35:56 PM PST |
