Dear Paul and List,
Thank you for your posting. I haven`t viewed the
Meteorite Times for several months. I have reviewed
the current issue and some of the past issues.
I want to address the Muong Nong tektites reported
to have come from Thailand. There is one original
published paper claiming that layered tektites were
found in Thailand; it should be regarded with caution.
I have done field research in Thailand now for over
20 years and I must report that the citing of Muong
Nong-type tektites is most likely false. I have
talked with the Geological Survey of Thailand person
that published and NONE were actually found in situ.
Some were reported to have been recovered during the
construction of a dam near the Laos border; but he has
admitted to me that he seriously has reservations to
their original find location. I have spend years
trying to duplicate their finds in the same locations
cited and none have been found.
Furthermore, ALL of the Muong Nong tektites that I
have seen offered in Thai are coming from Laos,
illegally; export is forbidden without an export
permit. My own field studies were unable to duplicate
findings of layered tektites in Thai.
Do NOT trust Thai dealers for locations; they may
NOT know, or even if they do they certainly will not
tell you the truth to protect their source.
  Best Regards, Dirk Ross...Tokyo

PS. If you or anyone on this list has self-collected
field data please comment; I myself would like to
confirm the existence of layered tektites in Thai.
