Meteorite festival to feature its own stamp
The Pratt Tribune (Kansas)

Stamp collectors are invited to Haviland, KS for a special treat at the
Meteorite Festival to be held on the Barclay College campus on July 8.
One of the booths open to the public is sponsored by the Haviland Postal
Service for the purpose of providing a cancellation stamp that features
the festival event.

The stamp contains an elongated outline of the state of Kansas with the
phrase "Ab Astris - From the Stars" and shows the Haviland crater in the
south central part of the state. Three stars adorn the upper left hand
portion. Beneath are the words "The Rock Stops Here!" and "Brenham
Meteorite."

Haviland Postmaster Anita Kendall says festival-goers should look for
her booth in Hocket on the Barclay campus all day on Saturday. Kendall
encourages collectors to bring stamped envelopes or cards with them to
be cancelled for mailing to friends or to themselves. She plans to have
stamped cards and stamps available for purchase as well.

According to Kendall, it is common for communities to have cancellation
stamps made for local events. Application must be made to the U.S.
Postal Service and the stamp must contain certain information including
the town, date, and state to be approved. In this case, Haviland artist,
Marlene Lofgren, who designed the stamp, made sure it would pass inspection.
