Games, clowns, live entertainment, food booths, stories, tours, vendors, a parade, a medallion hunt, helicopter rides, a 1,430-pound meteorite and meteorite experts will provide an event sure to please festival-goers of all ages. One such expert, Dr. Denton Ebel, comes all the way from New York City's American Museum of Natural History that features the Brenham Pallasite in its Hall of Meteorites. Ebel, a member of the museum's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, agreed to attend the event after being contacted by Haviland Mayor, Jeff Christiansen. Ebel is scheduled to present a lecture on the nature of pallasite meteorites on Saturday in Jackson Hall on the Barclay campus. He will then go out to the dig site of the recently discovered Arnold meteorite that weighs in a little over 1400 pounds. The Arnold meteorite and others will be on display to the public, and visitors are encouraged to bring their own finds in for meteorite expert Dr. Don Stimpson to examine. Mark Bostic of the Kansas Meteorite Society will also be on hand. The majority of activities for the Festival will take place on Saturday, July 8, beginning in the morning with helicopter rides from 7-10 a.m. and disc golf from 8-10 a.m. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. and exhibits open at11. A variety of food vendors will offer lunch including barbecue, funnel cakes, shaved ice, bierock, pies and cakes. In the afternoon, children's activities include clowns, face painting, meteor story time, moonwalk, and the Junior Adventure Program that awards prizes for kids who participate in a series of science and history stations. A picnic from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday at the Haviland City Park is sponsored by the Haviland Heritage Foundation. Guests are asked to bring a chair; the Foundation will furnish the meal. Fireworks and stargazing will round out the day. Astronomy Night is planned for both Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Two films entitled "The Privileged Planet" and "The Milky Way and Beyond" will be presented at the Haviland Friends Church by Steve Miller. Miller holds a B.A. in Philosophy and Apologetics from Trinity College of the Bible and is a member of the Creation Research Society. Weather permitting, the public can view the heavens through telescopes after the presentations. The Meteorite Festival is a result of the work of a committee of volunteers co-chaired by Jackie Robertson and Jeanne Christiansen. Rodney Hannan is in charge of the parade. Other members include Jeff Christiansen, Ed and Marlene Lofgren, Gail Zook, Duward Whitney, Sheryl White, Janet West, Roberta Leininger, Bonnie Ebert, Ryan Haase, and Herb Frazier, president of Barclay College. For a complete list of activities and information about signing up for the parade or scheduling helicopter rides, the public is asked to visit the Festival website at www.havilandkansas.com or call committee members Zook or Robertson.
