The Smithsonian Institution has agreed to return the meteorite under a three-year renewable loan agreement so it can be displayed at the North Dakota Heritage Center's new Corridor of Time exhibit, Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., announced Friday. Dorgan said meteorite was sold to the Smithsonian Institute by Daniel Buckwitz Jr., for $150 during the Depression, after it landed on his farm near New Leipzig. Buckwitz called it a "blessing from Heaven" after he sold it, Dorgan said in a statement. State officials have been trying to get the meteorite back for display. Dorgan is the ranking member of the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee that funds the Smithsonian. "This will be an exciting addition to the North Dakota Heritage Center's collection, and I hope it will encourage more visitors to learn about our state's rich history," Dorgan's statement said.
