Also, I had success on certain coins removing bad stuff by heating and quenching in water, SSSSSSS and it flaked off. Cheers, Kevin. >From: "Pete Pete" <rsvp321_at_hotmail.com> >To: meteorite-list_at_meteoritecentral.com >Subject: [meteorite-list] Cleaning Scale off Stonys >Date: Mon, 02 Jan 2006 17:45:34 -0500 >MIME-Version: 1.0 >X-Originating-IP: [216.221.81.97] >X-Originating-Email: [rsvp321_at_hotmail.com] >X-Sender: rsvp321_at_hotmail.com >Received: from six.pairlist.net ([209.68.2.254]) by >bay0-mc7-f4.bay0.hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.211); Mon, 2 >Jan 2006 14:45:42 -0800 >Received: from six.pairlist.net (localhost [127.0.0.1])by six.pairlist.net >(Postfix) with ESMTPid 7E7692C76B; Mon, 2 Jan 2006 17:45:37 -0500 (EST) >Received: from mu.pair.com (mu.pair.com [209.68.1.23])by six.pairlist.net >(Postfix) with SMTP id A57822C199for ><meteorite-list_at_lists6.meteoritecentral.com>;Mon, 2 Jan 2006 17:45:36 >-0500 (EST) >Received: (qmail 13123 invoked by uid 7111); 2 Jan 2006 22:45:36 -0000 >Received: (qmail 13118 invoked from network); 2 Jan 2006 22:45:36 -0000 >Received: from mailwash5.pair.com (66.39.2.5)by mu.pair.com with SMTP; 2 >Jan 2006 22:45:36 -0000 >Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1])by mailwash5.pair.com >(Postfix) with SMTP id E7C058D65Efor ><meteorite-list_at_meteoritecentral.com>;Mon, 2 Jan 2006 17:45:35 -0500 (EST) >Received: from hotmail.com (bay104-f34.bay104.hotmail.com [65.54.175.44])by >mailwash5.pair.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id AC8808D619for ><meteorite-list_at_meteoritecentral.com>;Mon, 2 Jan 2006 17:45:35 -0500 (EST) >Received: from mail pickup service by hotmail.com with Microsoft >SMTPSVC;Mon, 2 Jan 2006 14:45:35 -0800 >Received: from 65.54.175.200 by by104fd.bay104.hotmail.msn.com with >HTTP;Mon, 02 Jan 2006 22:45:34 GMT >X-Message-Info: vAu4ZEtdRigje6OiQf25CrP9/YWf82LiNc47CwTrwIg= >X-Original-To: meteorite-list_at_lists6.meteoritecentral.com >Delivered-To: meteorite-list_at_six.pairlist.net >Delivered-To: >arthur-meteoritecentral:com-meteorite-list_at_meteoritecentral.com >X-OriginalArrivalTime: 02 Jan 2006 22:45:35.0114 >(UTC)FILETIME=[3E7536A0:01C60FEE] >X-BeenThere: meteorite-list_at_meteoritecentral.com >X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 >Precedence: list >List-Id: Meteorite Discussion Forum <meteorite-list.meteoritecentral.com> >List-Unsubscribe: ><http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list>,<mailto:meteorite-list-request_at_meteoritecentral.com?subject=unsubscribe> >List-Archive: <http://six.pairlist.net/pipermail/meteorite-list> >List-Post: <mailto:meteorite-list_at_meteoritecentral.com> >List-Help: ><mailto:meteorite-list-request_at_meteoritecentral.com?subject=help> >List-Subscribe: ><http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list>,<mailto:meteorite-list-request_at_meteoritecentral.com?subject=subscribe> >Errors-To: meteorite-list-bounces_at_meteoritecentral.com >Return-Path: meteorite-list-bounces_at_meteoritecentral.com > >Hello, List, > >...so quiet in here...everyone still hung-over, eh? > >A while ago I posted a request for any suggestions to make getting scale >off of stone meteorites any easier, without a response. > >I tried a few things myself and I'll pass on the results for anyone who is >interested: > >De-scalers like CLR or Limeaway are messy, smelly and potentially >dangerous, even in a diluted form down to 25% with distilled water - and it >changed the appearance of the surface somewhat. > >A furnace humidifier "scale-be-gone" solution was the same disappointment. > > >Hydrogen Peroxide, however, was a definite help, and at the household 3%, >it's relatively safe. > >I submerged the intended stone in the peroxide for about an hour, and while >keeping it wet I started cleaning. >It is still a meticulous task - I still needed to use the dental picks, but >the scale comes off a lot easier and in bigger chips, and doesn't appear to >harm the meteorite. > >I soak the stones in alcohol when I'm done to displace the water. > >I'll try 10% later, and if there's an marked advange I'll post the >results...unless someone else tries it first... > >I suggest you wear disposable gloves, though, as the stuff will bleach your >fingertips. > >Any input or further suggestions would be appreciated. > >Cheers, >Pete > > >______________________________________________ >Meteorite-list mailing list >Meteorite-list_at_meteoritecentral.com >http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list Received on Tue 03 Jan 2006 08:53:42 AM PST |
