Please note the new date, chosen to avoid a conflict with the General Assembly of the International Mineralogical Association scheduled two weeks earlier in Kobe, Japan. The meeting will be held at ETH, in an impressive nineteenth-century building close to the city center, equipped with modern lecture halls. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Registration will start on Sunday afternoon, August 6, followed by a welcome party on the roof of the meeting venue, overlooking Z?rich. Oral sessions will be held from Monday to Friday, and a poster session is scheduled for Tuesday evening. Wednesday afternoon is reserved for an excursion to the beautiful city of Rapperswil on an early twentieth-century steamboat. The banquet on Thursday evening at the lakeshore will be within walking distance of the city center. In addition to the many other restaurants located close by, a convenient place for lunch is the excellent Mensa at ETH, which offers a large and diverse range of foods. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TRANSPORTATION ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Z?rich lies in the heart of Europe and is easily accessible by air (the intercontinental airport is only 15 minutes from the city center) and by train. Most places of interest are within walking distance or can easily be reached by an excellent public transportation system. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ACCOMMODATIONS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Z?rich offers plenty of hotel rooms, and many of them offer very reasonable rates. Some low-budget hotels may require the use of trams or buses, but many mid-class hotels are within walking distance of the meeting venue. The Z?rich meeting Web site <http://www.metsoc2006.ethz.ch> will provide information on booking, emphasising low- and mid-priced hotels. Early booking of hotels is essential, due to the annual "Street Parade" taking place on the Saturday immediately following the meeting. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TRAVEL GRANTS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Travel grants will be made available to qualified students who are members of the Meteoritical Society and a number of scientists from countries with limited financial resources. Applicants must be the sole or first author of an abstract to be presented at the meeting. They must also submit a travel award application form by the abstract deadline, May 9, 2006. More information will be included in the second announcement. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GUEST ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Z?rich is a very lively city during the summer months. The lake and river invite swimming, the old town with its restaurants and bars is a pleasant place to spend a nice evening, and museum enthusiasts will be captivated. A recent addition and top attraction is Europe's largest piece of tropical rainforest, imported from Madagascar. And for a truly remarkable tourist event, this year's annual "Street Parade" will take place on Saturday, August 12, when hundreds of thousands of fans of techno music of all ages will invade the city. A help desk will assist meeting participants in planning activities in the city and on half- or full-day trips to many attractive destinations. A four-day postconference field trip will take us to the Alps. One highlight of this excursion will be a ride to Europe's highest train station at the famous Jungfraujoch (3454 m), and a visit of the high-altitude scientific observatory. We will also visit key sites recording Quaternary glaciation history in the Swiss Alps and the Swiss midlands. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ OBTAINING A VISA ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Some foreign participants may need a visa for Switzerland. At the time of this announcement, it is not yet clear whether in August 2006 Switzerland will already belong to the Schengen Space, which would mean that any visa issued by countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Austria, etc., will automatically be valid for Switzerland and vice versa. For more information, contact a Swiss embassy or visit http://www.imes.admin.ch/einreise/visumvorschriften_e.asp. We will keep you informed about visa requirements on the Z?rich meeting Web site <http://www.metsoc2006.ethz.ch>. Upon request, we will provide registrants with official letters to be filed with visa applications. (Contact luethi_at_net.ethz.ch <mailto:luethi@net.ethz.ch> and provide your full name, date of birth, country of citizenship, and passport number.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FUTURE ANNOUNCEMENTS ON THE WEB ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Future announcements, including information on submission of abstracts, will be posted on this LPI Web site. Additional information on the meeting and registration forms will be posted on the Z?rich meeting Web site <http://www.metsoc2006.ethz.ch>.
