That of course also makes it the center of the turtles back. Meteors at a wide variety of angles can hit India, where this is less true for other spots on the turtle back. Hmm...wonder what happens to India if the turtle rolls over.. Clear Skies, Mark Bostick www.meteoritearticels.com Paper: The Bridgeport Telegram City: Bridgeport, Connecticut Date: Tuesday, December 28, 1920 Page: 14 THREE MINUTES JOURNEY Until some years after Columbus discovered America - for he though he really had reached India - even the wisest Europeans did not know "for a fact" that the earth was round. Scientists were in strange controversy over the question of whether or not a man who dared to sail straight out to sea would in some miraculous manner be turned back or sail off the earth into immeasurable space. Today most of us know the earth is round. But many a resident in India cannot believe it. Those who live in the city of Delhi claim that they have incontrovertible proof that the earth is flat. If you ask them for their proof they will lead you to the foot of the towering monument, and proudly point to it. "There!" they will say. "That is the center of the earth, which is flat!" From a distance this monument, which towers above the temple of which it is a part, looks like bundles of great sticks held together in bundles by cords. At intervals there are balconies from which the favored may look out upon the rest of the world, content in the belief that all the world is revolving about him. The reason for this belief and the erection of this monument lies in a story from the dim and distant past. It is said that many years ago every one was disturbed over the question of just where the center of the earth was. So Buddha and others in the mystic world beyond this life sent a meteorite flying through the sky to fall upon the earth just at its center. There -for the meteorite fell in the city of Delhi - the men of the day erected this monument. They named it Kutub Minor. And there it stands as proof to all believers that at the precise spot is the center of the world. Of course, no account is taken of all the other meteorites which have fallen in India and in very other part of the globe. (end) Received on Wed 13 Jul 2005 10:10:19 PM PDT |
