Below is what I wrote to someone else who is working on English subtitles for the film. When a srt
of English subtitles is available, I will take it and the French subtitles and put them as subtitle
tracks on a DVD, along with cleaning up the sound and video of the available file as much as I can
(not that I can do much with that file). I'll make the DVD freely downloadable when/if I can find a
good solution for making the 400 MB or so file available.

Some subtitle formats are complex than others, such as using actual bitmap files for the text when
it has been translated into some non-alphabetic language, for example. I don't know if there is any
easy way to sync up the files with any system (and I doubt that there is-- to do so I would think
that the software would have to actually understand the language on the film and make it fit in the
right place) so it is a matter of determining when the words are said and how long you want them to
display. But the .srt format is the simplest of them, and that's why I mentioned it. What you do
is put:

the number of the line of translation
the time the translation starts displaying --> the time the translation stops displaying
the line of translation

It should be easy enough to do this by hand with a plain text file (tedious and boring, yes, but not
fundamentally difficult).

See the examples below, and here's one off the top of my head:

Say that 14 minutes, 12 and a fraction seconds into the film, somebody says something for, say, the
35th time in the film, and you want to display the translation on-screen for 5 seconds. All
previous lines of speach (and printed text you want to translate) would number 1 through 34. This
35th one would go like this:

I'm sure that some program gave the exact fractions of seconds shown in the files, but you should be
able to estimate close enough what fraction of a second you want it to pop up at-- in this case I
put it a quarter or a second in. You could take the French translation someone made and get an idea
from it.
