Hello List,

Several of Martin's post don't make to the List, so I am
forwarding this one -- a very interesting approach !!!

Howdy Folks,

I have been playing with how to rank private meteorite collections for
quite a while.

Ever since the wave of NWAs flowed into collections, I have been
somewhat disillusioned by what has been called a major collection. In
fact, I have even thought of an experiment trying to create an entire
meteorite classification collection using nothing but eBay ads over the
course of one week, or one month. Heck, maybe even one day.

But back to the point. To rank a collection, there are no doubt many
ways to assess the individual contribution of a specimen within the
collection. And I think the evaluation of an overall collection must be
nothing more than the sum of the parts. So in a first attempt to
quantify a collection, I came up with the following non-scientific
scheme.

First, there are two schemes, one for falls and one for finds. Second,
there is no mechanism in my formula for NWAs and the like so they must
be excluded from my schemes right now. Third, there are several
specimens that are essentially monkey wrenches in the workings of the
schemes so they must be excluded at certain steps.

Each specimen is assigned a score by adding up all the points it
deserves according to the scheme. The overall score of the collection
is simply the the sum of the individual scores.

So here goes:

Remember, no NWAs, Saharas, DaGs, etc.

First, choose the appropriate scheme for a Fall or a Find:

For Falls, add the points where appropriate:

Fall: +3 points
Fell 1950-present: +0
Fell 1900-1949: +1
Fell 1850-1899: +2
Fell 1800-1849: +3
Fell before 1800: +4

Specimen weight between 1-10g: +1
Specimen weight between 10-50g: +2
Specimen weight between 50-100g: +3
Specimen weight between 100g-1kg: +4
Specimen weight greater than 1kg: +5

TKW is less than 1kg: +4
TKW is between 1-3kg: +3
TKW is between 3-6kg: +2
TKW is between 6-10kg:+1

Specimen is less than 1 percent of TKW: +0
Specimen is between 1-5 percent of TKW : +1
Specimen is between 5-20 percent of TKW: +2
Specimen is between 20-49 percent of TKW: +3
Specimen is 50 percent of TKW or holds Main Mass status: +4

Achondrite other than Millibillillie and SNCs: +1
SNC other than Zagami: +2

LL3 chondrite: +2
LL4 chondrite: +3

Complete slice: +1
End section or half-individual: +2
Complete individual other than Juancheng, Pultusk, Amgala, Nuevo
Mercurio, Holbrook etc.: +3
95 percent or greater crust: +2

Major historical importance (ie. Ensisheim): +3
Minor historical importance (ie. Sikhote-Alin): +2
Major collection documentation: +1

Type Specimen: +3

Subjective additions:
Photographed fall: +3
Struck object: +2
Struck living thing: +4
Well-known story about fall, or artwork/woodcuts create
(ie.Sikhote-Alin): +2
Minor story associtated with fall (ie. Oesel): +1
Of important size, form, interaction with humans, or the like: +1
Rare locality such as an island or small country: +1

For Finds:

Found 1950-present: +0
Found 1900-1949 except for Odessa: +1
Found 1850-1899 except for Canyon Diablo, Gibeon: +2

TKW is less than 1kg: +4
TKW is between 1-3kg: +3
TKW is between 3-6kg: +2
TKW is between 6-10kg:+1

Specimen is between 1-5 percent of TKW : +1
Specimen is between 5-20 percent of TKW: +2
Specimen is between 20-49 percent of TKW: +3
Specimen is 50 percent of TKW or holds Main Mass status: +4

Achondrite other than SNCs: +1

LL3 chondrite: +2
LL4 chondrite: +3

Complete slice: +1
End section or half-individual: +2
Complete individual: +3
95 percent or greater crust/intactness: +1

Major historical importance except for Canyon Diablo (ie. Hoba, Cape
York): +3
Minor historical importance (ie. Governador Valadares): +2
Major collection documentation (ie. Nininger): +2
Minor collection documentation (ie: Haag): +1

Type Specimen: +3

Subjective additions:
