They were water ice crystals which had formed on the outside of the
spacecraft. They were seen on subsequent spaceflights as well. The source
of the water was from the heat exchange process which cooled the astronauts
spacesuits and urine, which prompted a famous quote from Wally Schirra
about the constellation "urion".
