The fragment, a part of the celestial visitor that blazed its way in a southeasterly direction across the noon-day sky yesterday, fell near a herd of cows on a farm four miles west of here. Ray Bristow, farmer, who said he felt a “breeze” as three balls of fire passed nearby, recovered the fragment. It had hurled itself two and one-half feet in the ground. Bristow said he believed it was the smallest of the three fragments he saw. He was unable to locate the others. Davis Richardson, assistant professor of mathematics and astronomy at the university, planned to analyze the fragment today. He said a surface examination shows it to be a grey stone with possibly some iron. The passing of the meteor was reported from Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Some persons believed the phenomenon to be a burning airplane. (end) Received on Thu 25 Nov 2004 01:50:26 PM PST |
