This 'Virtual Earth' software (and backend Data, most from LandSat/GeoSat and NASA Blue Marble project) has been out for 2 years. It originally required an NVIDIA high performance graphics card to run, and NVIDIA had a deal with KeyHole to let NVIDIA owners subscribe for $39 TO $49 per year. New Version 2 LT allows the user of other high performance cards like the ATI Radeon series. I have subscribed for the last 2 years, and it really has become a 'must have' for many types of geographic, demographic and even geologic professions. Recently, 'Virtual MARS' was added as a free option, and uses data gleaned from all the NASA missions to Mars to even let you fly in the canyons and craters of the red planet, Cool. Google just purchased this killer application (undisclosed amount but real $$$'s) The service is now $29. An even better deal, and Google will put this software in the mainstream quickly. Of interest to meteorites... well, just about every visible crater on Earth can be seen in this photo-mosaic of earth, and some much better than others, depending upon the resolution for that part of the world. Meteor Crater, Arizona is just incredible. The large Canadian astroblemes are really impressive. You can even overlay onto this globe gravity maps for the Yucatan and Chesapeake buried craters as well as many other geologic sites. Cool Stuff Indeed. It uses up-to-date satellite images for some impressive mapping and effects. http://www.keyhole.com/index.html?promo=hpp-en-us-1 Have a great weekend, Art ______________________________________________ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list_at_meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list Received on Sat 20 Nov 2004 12:25:23 AM PST |
