WHEN AND WHERE

You are cordially invited to attend the 68th Annual Meeting of the
Meteoritical Society, to be held September 12-16, 2005, in Gatlinburg,
Tennessee. Gatlinburg is the popular gateway to the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the USA.
Gatlinburg offers a peaceful, safe environment with many restaurants and
shops within easy walking distance or accessible by trolley cars.

Plenary, oral, and poster sessions will be held in meeting facilities at
the Glenstone Lodge, which will also provide the primary accommodations
for meeting attendees. Scheduled events include a welcome reception and
barbecue, awards reception, an afternoon excursion to the Biltmore
Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, and the annual banquet.

Transportation: Gatlinburg is serviced by Knoxville's McGee-Tyson
Airport (TYS), which has direct flights from Atlanta, Charlotte,
Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Orlando, Pittsburgh, St. Louis,
and Washington. The airport is approximately 50 miles (approximately 80
km) from Gatlinburg. Van service will be provided to shuttle meeting
participants to and from the airport at nominal cost, and rental cars
(desirable if you wish to take advantage of the National Park) are
available in the terminal.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

Registration will begin on Sunday afternoon, September 11, and be
followed by a welcome reception and barbecue on the grounds of the
Glenstone Lodge. Oral sessions will be held in the Glenstone Lodge from
Monday morning through Friday noon, except for Thursday afternoon.
Poster sessions will be held on one or more evenings. Technical sessions
will cover a wide range of topics on meteoritics and planetary science.
A symposium honoring Ross Taylor's 80th birthday will focus on lunar
sample studies in the context of crustal evolution and remote sensing,
and another symposium will focus on nucleosynthesis during supernovae.

ACCOMMODATIONS

One hundred and fifty (150) rooms have been prebooked at the Glenstone
Lodge at special, very favorable rates ($83 plus tax for single or
double occupancy). The rate includes a free continental breakfast each
morning and other amenities. Reservations will be taken until September
11, 2005, or until the block is full; meeting participants are strongly
urged to register early. All rooms have either one king or two queen
beds, and up to four people can stay in a room (small additional charge
for more than two people). Participants should register directly with
the Lodge at 800-362-9522 or www.glenstonelodge.com .

TRAVEL GRANTS

A number of student travel grants will be made available to qualified
students and recent Ph.D.s who are members of the Meteoritical Society.
Applicants must be the sole or the first author of an abstract to be
presented at the meeting and must also submit a travel award application
form to the LPI by the same deadline. More information will be included
in the second announcement.

GUEST ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS

Gatlinburg offers abundant activities and shopping, and the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park is known for its spectacular flora, 900
miles of hiking trails, and stunning mountain vistas. Numerous
attractions, such as Ripley's Aquarium, the Cherokee Indian Reservation,
and Dollywood theme park are within easy reach. More information, as
well as contacts for tours, will be provided in registration packets. A
bus tour (approximately an hour's ride) to the Biltmore Estate in
Asheville, North Carolina, is included in the registration fee for all
participants. The trip will include a tour of the house (America's
largest home) and gardens, a visit to the Biltmore winery, and the
annual banquet at the Deer Park Restaurant on the Estate grounds.
Because of the afternoon tours, dress for the banquet will be informal.

Future announcements, including information on submission of
abstracts, will be posted on this Web site.

Additional information (such as details of the meeting, maps, and
registration forms) will be posted on the meeting Web site
