If Mars had lakes and conditions hospitable to at least microscopic life, and Earth had life at that time, then the ONLY way MARS could NOT have had life is for there to be an exact 100% chance that any meteorite from Earth was completely sterilized by the space environment before reaching Mars. 99.999% isn't good enough, because of the many chances of Earth meteors. Why there must have been hundreds of Earth meteorites hitting Mars from the Sudbury and Hudson Bay impacts alone at the time, give or take a thousand years.
