WHEN AND WHERE
                        
You are cordially invited to attend the 67th Annual Meeting of the
Meteoritical Society, to be held August 2-6, 2004, in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil.

The plenary and oral sessions for the meeting will be held at the
Sofitel Convention Center located in the same building as the
conference hotel, which will also provide the primary accommodations
for meeting attendees. The hotel overlooks Copacabana Beach, with
easy access to Rio's most celebrated beaches, Ipanema and Leblon,
and is within easy walking distance of many fine restaurants and shops.

Other scheduled events, including the welcome reception and
poster-party session, will be held at Sofitel Hotel. The annual
banquet will be held in the Rio de Janeiro Yacht Club, overlooking
Guanabara Bay and Sugar Loaf.

Transportation: The official airline for the meeting is VARIG
Airlines, which has several direct flights. Rio de Janeiro is
served by the International Airport Antonio Carlos Jobim, located
23 km from the city. The conference hotel is easily accessible
from the airport by special taxis, which cost about $20 US. Bus
transportation to the banquet will be provided.

METEORITICAL SOCIETY 2004 ON THE WEB
                        
Meeting announcements and information regarding accommodations,
registration, submission of abstracts, tours, and meeting
site (including maps) can be obtained at the meeting Web site at

www.metsoc2004.org .

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
                        
Registration will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 1, and
will be followed by a welcome reception to be held in the foyer
of the Sofitel Convention Center. Oral sessions will be held in
the Sofitel Convention Center from Monday morning through
Friday noon, except for Wednesday afternoon. There will be a
formal poster-party session on Monday evening at the Sofitel
Convention Center. Posters will remain on display until Tuesday
evening. Technical sessions are expected to cover a wide range
of topics on meteoritics and planetary science.

ACCOMMODATIONS
                        
Approximately 180 rooms have been prebooked at the Sofitel Hotel,
and will be held until May 25, 2004. A special rate for single or
double occupancy was negotiated for Meteoritical Society Meeting
attendees.

This specially reduced price will also be available to meeting
attendees for the weekends before and after the meeting. To ensure
availability, early reservations are strongly recommended. If you
are looking for roommates who may be interested in sharing
the cost of a hotel room, please contact the Conference Secretariat.
Participants are requested to book and pay directly to
CONGREX do Brasil Ltda (metsoc2004_at_congrex.com.br).

NOTE: If you make reservations directly with the hotel, the special
rate will not be offered.

TRAVEL GRANTS
                        
A number of student travel grants will be made available to qualified
students and recent Ph.D.s who are members of the Meteoritical Society.
Applicants must be the sole or the first author of an abstract to be
presented at the meeting and must also submit a travel award
application form to the LPI by the same deadline. More information
will be included in the second announcement.

GUEST ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS
                        
Rio de Janeiro is a cosmopolitan metropolis, known worldwide for its
scenic beauty and its natural resources; the city provides a
harmonious and agreeable environment for its visitors, for both
leisure and work. Whether it is evening or during the day, the
visitor quickly finds out why Rio is known as the Marvelous City.
Rio is nestled between the mountains and the ocean, with its
magnificent shorelines including charming bays and beautiful beaches.

Several activities and excursions are planned for meeting attendees
and their guests/families, particularly for Wednesday afternoon,
including tours to Sugar Loaf, Christ the Redeemer, and Tijuca
National Park.

Organizers will consider input received from submitted Indication of
Interest Forms to finalize plans for guest activities and
excursions.

Please submit the Indication of Interest even if you do not care
about electronic notification of future announcements. The number of
interest forms received will facilitate meeting planning by the Local
Organizing Committee.
