Another interesting tidbit culled from Buchwald's trilogy:

"During the fire that followed the great earthquake in 1906 the building
was completely ruined. A few fossils and meteorites could, however, be
recovered from the rubble, but since the labels had been destroyed
some confusion existed as to the identity of the various specimens.
Linsley (1934) suspected that an alleged Canyon Diablo specimen
in the Ferry Building was, in fact, the missing mass of Oroville, and
Butler (1964) proved it to be so."
