Dear List,

For what it is worth I have done a bit more than just check my lawn. My wife teaches biology at a small college about 30 miles NW of Jonesboro that generally serves students from northeast Arkansas. Therefore I have asked the people that may get a "I think I found a meteorite" call to let me know. I've also made sure that by tomorrow they'll have access to a couple of reasonably fresh chondrites, a sikhote-alin and a couple of Richard Norton books.

On the downside, the soil here is alluvial and the rocks that are already present tend to be 50 gram rounded things that often have dark exteriors. Many have bits of crinoid and bryozoan fossils that at a glance can look like pits where chondrules have fallen away (as in NWA 869). A small chondrite could easily hide among these things.

As far as inspecting red cars is concerned, it is interesting to note that my wife's car is burgundy (almost red) and that yesterday evening there actually happened to be a newly-arrived meteorite on the front seat. However, the meteorite was a sikhote-alin, fresh from the mailbox.

Sincerely,
