Dear List,

I have something a little different for you all today. Last week I purchased a Hupe unclassified Saharan cut individual which, of course, Greg and Adam shipped with lightning speed (thanks guys).

On superficial observation this 90 gram individual looked to be a standard L6 chondrite. I was going to use it to practice my polish techniques and to show at Quartzite as an example of a stony. As luck would have it, there I was polishing the main body cut surface on a flat lapp turntable when <ZING> I let go of the thing and it went flying into the edge of the lapp and then out and across the workshop bouncing off of things along the way. I retrieved the stone and alas the fusion crust had taken some hard dings and it looked terrible. What to do? “Well,” I reasoned, “I guess we slice it and sell it!”; so off to the saw I went.

The slicing went well, only ~20% material loss; I got 75.75 grams of slices from 90 grams . . . not bad. Later, when taking pictures, I noticed how peculiar certain slices looked. Now I need some help from you all to figure out the nature of this little meteorite. On my picture site at http://community.webshots.com/user/b0rtz please go to the Unclassified Saharan album.

The exterior pictures are the three main faces of the exterior before cutting. Notice Exterior #3 because that face becomes the region in question on the cut faces. The original Hupe cut shows pretty normal L6 chondrite characteristics with metal inclusions evenly distributed. At Cut #3 and on, however, there is noticeably dark red and brown region across one entire side of each face with drastically less metal. It’s difficult to tell if it’s another whole lithology or a shocked metamorphic region (IMB) or what. It’s definitely not like anything I’ve seen in any other L6 meteorites. Greg and Adam, are any of your other Saharans showing this? Should I send this up for classification?

Kindest Regards,

Mark
