So it should work, but the result may be not the best one, just because ferric chloride (or chlorine in it) can have some unexpected reactions with the met, and the result may be an ugly yellow-green goo. So, in fact in this case ferric chlorid itself doesnīt make the etch, but in reaction with the Fe / Ni it products hydrochlorid acid. In this case hydrochlorid acid is stronger than nitric acid used usually, so it makes a deeper etch in shorter time. Anyway, there is at least a pic of Nantan etched with ferric chloride in this Nortons book, and it looks quite nice. But perhaps itīs best to try just with Nantans fist...;- take care, pekka Tom aka James Knudson wrote: > think ferric chloride is not strong enough to etch Fe / Ni, but havenīt > ever tried...;- > > > > Norton's new book praise's Ferric Chloride as an etching solution for > irons. : ) > > Thanks, Tom > Peregrineflier <>< > The proudest member of the IMCA 6168 > > -- > -- Pekka Savolainen Jokiharjuntie 4 FIN-71330 Rasala FINLAND + 358 400 818 912 Group Home Page: http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/eurocoin Group Email Address: eurocoin_at_smartgroups.com --------------070008060609050903060708 Content-Type: text/html; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

Thanks, Tom,

yes, indeed, Norton says in the Ensyclopedia of Meteorites (Appendix D, page 316);

"Etching with ferric chloride usually brings terror to the hearts of the seasoned
meteorite collector and museum curator..."

So it should work, but the result may be not the best one, just because ferric chloride
(or chlorine in it) can have some unexpected reactions with the met, and the result may
be an ugly yellow-green goo.

So, in fact in this case ferric chlorid itself doesn´t make the etch, but in reaction with
the Fe / Ni it products hydrochlorid acid.
