GIANT METEORITE SEEN AS CAUSE OF ATOM BLAST

HAMDEN, Conn., Jan. 9. (AP) - A Scientist says a giant meteorite =
may have set off an atomic explosion 20,000 to 50,000 years ago in =
Arizona where man-made atomic devices are being tested.
Dr. Harvey H. Nininger of the American Meteorite Museum in Arizona =
said he had analyzed soil materials in a meteorite-made crater and found =
they resemble those in the rubble left by recent atomic explosions at =
the Arizona proving grounds.
"This suggests," he said, "that atomic fisson had taken place at =
the time of the meteorites impact with earth or, if not, the =
temperatures were comparable."
He said the crater is located in the wastelands near Flagstaff, =
Ariz., and is known to have been made by a meteorite which plunged to =
earth in pre-historic times.
The soil surrounding the crater contains tiny droplets of metal - =
some no larger than a period on a printed page - while other formations =
contain iron and nickel, Dr. Nininger said.
None of these metals contained in the crater soil has rusted, he =
said, but discarded machinery left there by workmen 25 years ago had =
almost deteriorated.
Dr. Nininger, who has spent more than 30 years investigating serial =
phenomena, lectured to members of an organization called Saucer =
Phenomena and Celestrial Enquire (SPACE).
