A large hole appeared sometime between Monday and Wednesday in the ice of Lake Pitsusjärvi. On Tuesday a bright light was seen in the sky. According to Johannes Kultima, an expert at the Geophysical Observatory of Sodankylä, the flash and the hole may have been the result of a meteorite. Another possible cause of such a hole could be flood water that got stuck between layers of ice. The hole in the ice is about three metres wide and seven metres long, and there is no radiation coming from it. Researchers from the Sodankylä Observatory went to Pitsusjärvi to examine the site on Friday. A total of 13 meteorites have been found in Finland so far. Received on Fri 25 Apr 2003 02:44:44 PM PDT |
