Nininger, curator of the Denver = museum and authority on meteorites. He expressed the belief that thirty of more pits recently = discovered thirty-five miles south-east of here were caused by an = earthshaking explosion which raved in the roofs of great subterranean = caverns. The explosion, he said, undoubtedly resulted from the impact of the = great meteor which formed Meteor crater twenty-three miles southwest of = here and about forty miles west of the pits. Dr. Nininger headed an expedition to the pits yesterday to = determine whether they were caused by fragments of the big meteor. He = concluded they resulted from the explosion rather than meteorites. If these pits, some of which are three hundred feet across and 150 = feet deep, are the result of caved in roofs of caverns, Dr. Nininger = reasoned that other caverns undoubtedly exist in the same area and that = entrances to them may be discoverd from canyons in the vicinity. Dr. Nininger said that the explosion resulting from the falling = meteor thousands of years ago, as evidenced by the newly discovered = pits, indicated that the nearby cities of Winslow and Flagstaff would = have been wiped out had they existed then. "The explosion of a one thousand-pound bomb dropped from a plane in = London would be puny and inconsequential by comparison." he said. Scientists have long known, Dr. Nininger said, that the Meteor = crater resulted from one of the greatest explosions which ever occurred = on the earth's surface, but the pits near Chevalon canyon offer the = first evidence of the devastation it caused at a great distance. He estimated the mile-wide meteor crater is ten thousand times = larger than the biggest pit ever left by a man-made bomb. The expedition by plane and horseback was jointly sponsored by = Transcontinental & Western Air, Inc., and Edsel Ford. ------=_NextPart_000_0291_01C30981.9E4FB1C0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META http-equiv=3DContent-Type = content=3Dtext/html;charset=3Diso-8859-1> <META content=3D"MSHTML 6.00.2800.1141" name=3DGENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY id=3DMailContainerBody=20 style=3D"PADDING-LEFT: 10px; FONT-WEIGHT: normal; FONT-SIZE: 10pt; = COLOR: #000000; BORDER-TOP-STYLE: none; PADDING-TOP: 15px; FONT-STYLE: = normal; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; BORDER-RIGHT-STYLE: none; = BORDER-LEFT-STYLE: none; TEXT-DECORATION: none; BORDER-BOTTOM-STYLE: = none"=20 leftMargin=3D0 topMargin=3D0 acc_role=3D"text" CanvasTabStop=3D"true"=20 name=3D"Compose message area"><?xml:namespace prefix=3D"v" = /><?xml:namespace prefix=3D"o" /> <DIV>Title: Reno Evening Gazette <BR>City: Reno, Nevada <BR>Date: = Wednesday,=20 October 08, 1941<BR>Page: 8</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>EXPLOSION CAUSED HUGE CRATER IS BELIEF</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> WINSLOW, Ariz., Oct. 8, (AP) - The = possiblity that=20 caverns rivaling those near Carlsbad, N.M., in size and beauty exist in = northern=20 Arizona was advanced today by Dr. Harvey H.
