The object was reportedly headed in a west to east direction and was about 20 degrees above the horizon with a blue green tail. Witnesses say it had breaks in the tail and was throwing off chunks as it came down. They say the event lasted more than 10 seconds and the tail was quite long. The bright object, which has yet to be confirmed as a meteor, was spotted in the Thornton area, going down north of Longmont. Most calls have come in from the Larimer County area and as far as Sterling, 7NEWS reported. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science research team is investigating whether it was a meteorite that streaked across the sky, or if it was something else. The museum is asking the public's help. If you videotaped the meteor or happened to catch it in a photograph, call the museum at (303) 355-3864 or 7NEWS at (303) 832-0200.Please do not call with just reports of the meteor. That will slow down the investigation. Received on Sat 07 Sep 2002 11:16:45 PM PDT |
