Have you looked at meteor crater on terra- server.com? It is so cool you can zoom right down to the crater! I found it interesting that you could see an area from the craters north rim that is lighter color than the rest of the desert! It looks a little like the moon.<BR>Thanks, Tom</P></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV>The proudest member of the I.M.C.A. #6168</DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>From: Steven Schoner <AMERICAN_METEORITE_SURVEY_at_YAHOO.COM> <DIV></DIV>To: Tom / james Knudson <PEREGRINEFLIER_at_HOTMAIL.COM> <DIV></DIV>Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] crater <DIV></DIV>Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 14:49:17 -0700 (PDT) <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>It has been 6 or more years since I have been out <DIV></DIV>there. <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>But as I recall, I remember finding a shard of <DIV></DIV>Coconino sandstone about 5 miles due west of the <DIV></DIV>crater on what was Kiabab limestone. Whether it was <DIV></DIV>transported there or blown there by the impact I <DIV></DIV>cannot say. <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>However, I also found a number of .5 to 20 gram or so <DIV></DIV>irons that were definitely the shrapnel variety. Now <DIV></DIV>this surprised me as I was not expecting such small <DIV></DIV>pieces to be found 5 plus miles from the crater <DIV></DIV>proper. And more surprising, perhpas, was the fact <DIV></DIV>that nothing larger than 470 grams was found in the <DIV></DIV>several square miles that I searched. This was <DIV></DIV>consistent with the map that Holsinger had made in <DIV></DIV>1909--- no larger irons greater than 1 lb were found <DIV></DIV>there. But the small pieces I found interesting, as <DIV></DIV>did Roddy and Shoemaker. It was their opinion that <DIV></DIV>these were indeed "shrapnel" and that a "ray" of <DIV></DIV>material must have extended in the westerly direction <DIV></DIV>extending due west and southwest of the crater. <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>This is also confirmed with regards to reports of <DIV></DIV>numerous small irons having been found 1.5 to 3.5 <DIV></DIV>miles due west and southwest of the crater. <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>As per the agreement that I was bound to (I think I <DIV></DIV>might go into the details of this later just to show <DIV></DIV>the nonsense and stonewalling that I had to go <DIV></DIV>through) all material that I collected was to be sent <DIV></DIV>to UCLA and or ASU, which I did. But due to the <DIV></DIV>aforementioned stonewalling the main objectives of the <DIV></DIV>project remain unfulfilled. <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>And now I am too old, and arthritic to complete it <DIV></DIV>even if I were allowed to. <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>And all the while irons still are being dug up, not <DIV></DIV>documented, and eventually not enough will remain to <DIV></DIV>make any future collection as I had envisioned over 20 <DIV></DIV>years ago meaningful. <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>Winona, silicate and graphite inclusion questions, the <DIV></DIV>Type I, II, and III iron relationships.. and other <DIV></DIV>potential questions will not be answered. <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>Steve Schoner <DIV></DIV>http://www.geocites.com/american_meteorite_survey <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>--- Tom / james Knudson <PEREGRINEFLIER_at_HOTMAIL.COM> <DIV></DIV>wrote: <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <HR> <DIV></DIV> <DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <P>Hello List, I wrote this to steve in a reply to his <DIV></DIV>email, but it did not make it to the List: )I don't <DIV></DIV>know if it made it to him either. Does any one know how far away <DIV></DIV>from the center of the crater can material that once <DIV></DIV>was in the crater be found? In other words (i can't <DIV></DIV>understand the question myself) How far away from the <DIV></DIV>crater can you find rocks that where part of the <DIV></DIV>ground before the meteor hit? <BR><BR>Thanks, Tom <P></P> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV>The proudest member of the I.M.C.A. #6168</DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV><BR clear=all> <HR> MSN <DIV></DIV>Photos is the easiest way to share and print your <DIV></DIV>photos: <A DIV <>href='http://g.msn.com/1HM1ENUS/c156??PI=44364'>Click <DIV></DIV>Here</A><BR> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>______________________________________________ <DIV></DIV>Meteorite-list mailing list <DIV></DIV>Meteorite-list_at_meteoritecentral.com <DIV></DIV>http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV>__________________________________________________ <DIV></DIV>Do you Yahoo!? <DIV></DIV>Faith Hill - Exclusive Performances, Videos & More <DIV></DIV>http://faith.yahoo.com <DIV></DIV></div><br clear=all><hr>Unlimited Internet access for only $21.95/month.
