We both hold them the middle weekend of the show, 1 week before the "retail show" which marks the end of the show, in general. The "Tucson Show" began about 25 or 30 years ago, with dealers opening their doors to the public and selling wholesale several days before the retail show. That generated so much business that in a few years, dealers were coming a week early and doing more business selling before the show than at the show - soon, many dealers came ONLY for the wholesale show, and it stretched to 2 weeks prior to the "retail show" and became the largest "gem and mineral show" in the world. Now, it is not possible to spend 8 hrs a day for 2 weeks and see all the rooms. Dozens upon dozens of motels are filled with 200 to 500 rooms of dealers. It is spectacular - and overwhelming. Bob Haag, Al Lang, Edwin Thompson, Blaine Reed and a few others started selling meteorites at the show over a dozen years ago & many dealers have since been added to that list. You also get some Australian & Russian and other mineral dealers that carry meteorites in addition to minerals and/or fossils. Most, but by no means all, the meteorite dealers are at the Inn Suites. Darryl has held his 2 auctions "poolside" at 10 AM on Sunday and I have held my 3 auctions at the Jr. Chamber of Commerce building, about 2 or 3 miles from there, on Fri or Sat evening. Darryl's auction is called "The Macovich Auction" (after a WWII buddy of Darryl's father) and tends to offer specimens of value from a couple hundred dollars to many thousands of dollars. Some of the very best quality and visually exciting material to be found, not only at the Tucson Show, but in the world are offered at Darryl's auction. My auction, sometimes called "The People's Auction" or at other times called "The Michael Blood Auction," offers the opportunity to anyone to sell stuff they have upgraded in their collection, dealers sometimes offer a range of stuff with no minimum bid, dealers who on the spur of the moment decide to put that one really killer piece up for grabs, even though it is a $3K to $35K piece...last minute entry, etc. It gives buyers the chance to get stuff at prices from under $10 to some really valuable material - either for private collection or for resale. There are always numerous items sold for under $10 and I have sold many items between $3K and $4K - the highest being a fabulous slice of Lake Murry for $7,600 bought by +. Of course, there are all kinds of specimens between $10 and $1,000, as well. Just about everyone into meteorites at the show comes, and it is a party atmosphere, with beer and laughs and a lot of good times. So, "the Tucson Auction" is a title that is a little misleading, as there are two auctions in Tucson.
