Dear Rosie and List:

Matt and I did amuse ourselves considerably, about this very matter earlier today.

He and I once had the dubious pleasure of dining together on waterlogged green beans, soggy mashed potatoes and very hard, overcooked, char-broiled . . . something . . . at the world famous Alien Inn in Rachel, Nevada -- which is pretty much just a bar inside a cinder block shack in the middle of the desert.

As many of you will already know, I suspect, Rachel -- and hence the Alien Inn, which is practically the only building in town -- is in the heart of the so-called Extraterrestrial Highway, a road which passes very close to the so-called Area 51. The Alien Inn is almost entirely packed with pro-NRA material and alien paraphernalia: t-shirts, glow in the dark "greys," buttons, mugs, alien dummies, you name it. My "Area 51 Topless XXX and Who Cares?!" T-shirt which was quite a hit in Tucson this year (and not nearly as obscene as it sounds) was in fact purchased in the Alien Inn.

So, what I said to Matt this morning was, "If a meteorite landed in Nevada, I'm dead certain it would have been in the car park of the Alien Inn." After all, they have been expecting it -- or something similar -- for quite some time.

I've been trying to avoid doing this, but I guess I'll now have to share this photo with you all. It's a picture of me and a few friends, and was taken by Matt inside the dreaded Alien Inn, during the spring of last year:
